1. Navy blazer
2. Animal sweater
3. Loafers
4. New Toms
5. Riding boots
6. My Perfect Jeans
7. White button down
8. Colorful blazer (red, in particular)
I've picked up a few things on the list so far, including the animal sweater and loafers, though I'm still hunting for a studded pair now (new infatuation/subcategory). Still no dice on the navy or red blazers, Toms, riding boots, jeans, or a white button down - I tried a few but didn't like the fit or the material (WHY are so many white blouses completely see through???), so I still have quite a few gaps. I just noticed while writing this out that I was able to pick up the two trendier items pretty cheaply/easily, while I've been having more trouble fulfilling the classic items on the list. I think/hope this is because I'm not willing to spend money on crappy quality; I'd rather wait, save some cash, and spend it on something well-made and timeless. Quality, not quantity!
With that said, here are a few more items I'm trying to add to my closet this season.
9. Day dresses
Gap graphic shirtdress
Tahari at Macy's
Anthropologie
I've been feeling stuck in a rut at work lately, and I think it's because I'm bored by my work pants and standard pencil skirts (don't get me wrong, I still love them... but sometimes I don't want to iron a shirt!). Since dresses are such a nice and easy way to get dressed in the morning but still look put-together, I've been hunting for some fun options. I bought a striped version from Banana Republic and a classic LBD that's both work-appropriate and fancy enough for evening events (see them here), so now I'm hoping to find something a bit more fun - either a great versatile print or something colorful.

10. Plaid button-down

Gap western plaid
F21 colorful plaid
Old Navy flannel plaid
Urban Outfitters colorful AND flannel plaid - winner?
This is a tricky category because there are so many subcategories to consider... Western plaid? Plaid flannel? Tartan plaid? Colorful lightweight plaid? What's a girl to do??? I think I'm going to dig through my closet to see what I already have (pretty sure I have a western-looking plaid lurking around somewhere in there...) and then narrow down from there. Though I have to be honest - I already scoped out the Urban Outfitters version in person and it looks great. They didn't have the size I wanted, so I'm still not sure about the fit, but I did order it online so fingers crossed that it's long enough and not boxy/weird.

11. Tweed/menswear blazer

J. Crew
F21
Zara
Macy's - a different spin in red
I seem to have classics on the brain this fall, given that this is the third blazer on my wish list (and there are two types of button-down shirts as well). Fall is just such a great time to layer up and get a little heavy with fabrics, so I couldn't resist putting this timeless classic on my wish list too. I have a lighter taupe herringbone blazer that I do love, but I'm really looking for a dark brown/gray version (even better if it has elbow patches!) I tried the Zara version on in-store the other day, but again they didn't have the size I was looking for. Haven't ordered this one yet ($90 is a bit steep for an impulse buy), but I've added it to my cart about 8 times...

12. Something???
I was really, really trying to come up with something to fill this spot for my fall wish list, but to be honest with you, I can't come up with a final item. I've always had a hard time making "favorites" lists because I'm convinced I'll take up all the spots and not leave room for something that I think of later. In this case, though, I think this is more of an unsatisfied empty slot; as in, I think I haven't seen everything fall has to offer yet, so I'm reserving this spot for the next great thing I see. My list is full of classics, and I want something a little bit trendier/unique to add to the mix, but so far the trends of this fall seem like they'll be so fleeting that I'm not sure I want to commit (leather skirts, I'm looking at you). Maybe your lists can inspire me - what's on your wish list for this fall?
And finally, you'll notice that I didn't put "oxblood" as any of my 12 wishlist items. That's because I already purchased various items in that color over the last few years, back when it was called burgundy and maroon. I'm not saying I won't buy anything else in this color this fall, that I hate on anyone who buys it, or that I don't like it (I do!), I'm just saying it's not new. I'm not the first person to think this by any means (for example, see Fran's thoughts along with the best gif ever) and I surely won't be the last, but I just wanted to get that out there. I'm not hating on maroon - it's fantastic for fall. Always has been. But I'm not going to call it "oxblood" because (a) it's gross, and (b) it's a cheap ploy created my marketing people to make you think you need to go out and buy something new to participate in the trend. You don't. I'm sure you have something in your closet that works! If you really don't and/or if you feel like grabbing something new and inspired, I'm all for that - the time is ripe for maroon plundering, so go forth and purchase burgundy clothes if you like (I'm sure I will!). However, most people who like fall (everyone?) dig maroon and always have, so it's becoming annoying to see "omgzOXBLOOD!" everywhere I look like it's some kind of new idea, and it's even worse that it's such an obvious marketing tactic. I've had things in my closet this color since 6th grade - specifically a sweet flannel shirt that I wore with matching, mid-thigh maroon denim shorts. Very My So-Called Life. See, maroon = always in style, am I right???

I really like that Macys tweed blazer, so cute!

Always Maylee
Thanks Yi-chia!
DeleteI've been noticing myself craving more work dresses as well - can't wait to see what you find!! And love your oxblood rant...totally 100% agree!!
ReplyDeleteOoh good, I hope you find some cute dresses too so we can steal ideas from each other! :) Haha yes - I totally remember your oxblood rant too. It's even extending into makeup too now; I was reading some mag last night and it was talking about how "oxblood lip color" is so hot for fall. Gag!
DeleteWhere did you find your animal print sweater? That is on my fall wish list too!
ReplyDeleteI also want a new pair of shoe boots in a taupe suede and some more cozy lightweight sweaters.
I got mine at Piperlime - it's Hive & Honey, this is the exact sweater - http://piperlime.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=362148002. I heard there were also some really cute ones at Target, but I never got around to checking it out, and I'm sure there are good ones at F21 and/or H&M if you can brave it :)
DeleteOoh, I like the sound of taupe suede boots and cozy sweaters too! Great choices!
oooh i love that urban outfitters shirt!!!! xO!
ReplyDeletewww.thehautecookie.com
Me too! I actually just got my shipment yesterday and I love it as much in person, yay! :)
DeleteI also have my eye out for a tweed blazer! Check out H&M, they had some great options. Though not clothing, my goal this fall is to find the perfect watch!
ReplyDeleteColleen
Awesome, thanks for the H&M tip Colleen, I will definitely check it out this weekend! The perfect watch is a great wish list item! I have a few watches - they're so classic and long-lasting that they're always a good investment :)
Deleteso many things to say!
ReplyDelete1. I LOVE that middle dress. If I had a place to wear dresses, I would buy it. Does it come in different colors? I want them all.
2. I bought the black flannel from Old Navy. I sized up so it fit a bit looser in the shoulders, but then had to slim the sides because they did some weird flare thing. I really want the red UO version though - I've been eyeing it up for months!
3. so funny that you posted those tweed blazers because I wore mine today...it even has elbow patches! Its H&M last season but I think they have some very similar ones in stores now. Seriously, move to Madison, become my roommate and lets swapsies closets
4. I was thinking about the whole marketing thing the other day after you commented saying that and its SO TRUE. I'm almost upset that people are falling for it. I've loved maroon for ages (my aunt told me once in 8th grade that it's the color that looks best on me) so now that people are like "omg have you heard of oxblood?! you must try it!" I just want to be like "girl, please".
Yay, I love numbered comments! :)
Delete1. Right??? Of course it's the most expensive one I found though. It comes in this ivory/black color and also cobalt/black - tough decision!
2. I remember reading that on your blog, good call on slimming the sides - I have found that ON's blouses are usually pretty boxy in general. I just took a chance and ordered the navy one, but I have a feeling I may not be keeping it since I also just received the UO one and I love it (get it, it's awesome! I did size up though because it's a bit on the short side, fyi).
3. Ahhh I totally remember that H&M version from last year - I had it in my hands and decided not to buy it for some reason (huge mistake!). I'm really hoping I can get my hands on this year's version this weekend. Omg I would seriously love to share closets - if I ever move to Madison, we'll definitely be roommates (or you could move to Chi... just sayin). Our hubby/boyf can be roomies across the hall or something :)
4. I'm so glad you agree with this, and lol at your "girl please" - that's exactly how I feel when people keep trying to hype it to me. It's the same phenomenon as earlier this year with omgzMINT everything, which, I'll be honest, I was totally into that because any blue/green color is my favorite so I was in heaven. It was pretty obvious marketing even then, especially because people could not figure out what technically qualified as mint (vs what was aqua, teal, turquoise, etc.). Next spring it will be like "oh check out this new color, robins egg blue!" which will be the exact same or 1/2 shade off of this year's mint. Also, I swear people have also told me that maroon is one of my best colors to wear! I think it's a universally flattering color because it's a good mix of warm and cool tones and it's dark enough that it won't wash anyone out, so I think it probably looks amazing on everyone. Hooray for maroon!
Love you wish list. I actually have alot of the items you have listed-most of which were thrifted. Oh and I found a gorgeous red blazer at Plato's closet so you may try a place like that or maybe even NY&Co-they have some really awesome colors this season but they are a little expensive. And it's funny what you said about 'oxblood'-I featured that in one of my recent posts and I too was wondering why it couldn't just be called burgundy; oxblood makes my stomach turn. Good luck completing your wish list hun!
ReplyDeletehttp://thriftyandshameless.blogspot.com
So awesome that you thrifted most of these MissRockwell, and thanks for the tips! Haha, glad you're in the same boat with oxblood - it's so silly! :)
DeleteLove the tweed blazers! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I totally agree with you - burgundy is a classic color like navy and calling it something icky doesn't make me want to go buy more. Geez. I already have tons. :)
Omg totally - I can't wait until the winter when people try to start calling navy "Midnight Blue" or something like it's a different color, haha :)
DeleteNavy and tweed are on my fall wish list as well! It has been extremely difficult to find a good quality navy blazer!! When you find one please share!!
ReplyDeletebalancingahecticworld.blogspot.com
I will definitely share when I find a good one - I have been searching high and low too, and it's really tough to decide!
